Welcome

Welcome to the Office of Diversity at MassBay Community College. Here, we don't just acknowledge diversity; we celebrate it as the heartbeat of MassBay! In a world where understanding and embracing our differences is more crucial than ever, our mission is clear: fostering understanding and acceptance for everyone on campus, creating a rich tapestry that reflects the incredible diversity of our world. Together with offices across campus, we actively support and advance educational programs that enhance the understanding of diversity in all its beautiful forms, including age, ability, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and religion. We tackle challenging issues head-on – social justice, prejudice, discrimination – and believe in the power of dialogue, eliminating bias, and ensuring equal opportunities for all demographics.

We celebrate YOU! Your perspective and experiences are crucial in shaping the culture that defines the best in all of us. Drop by, engage, and share your thoughts. Together, we're building a greater MassBay that reflects the strength of unity in diversity.

Warm regards,

Lynn Moore, Ph.D.

MassBay Community College is committed to creating an equitable, inclusive, and transformative learning environment, a college community that respects and celebrates the diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences of the MassBay community. We strive to build a learning community of mutual respect, belonging, and understanding. We recognize that such a community allows people to realize their full potential. When students, faculty, and staff meet in a college environment where diversity, inclusion, respect, and social justice predominate, we all learn, grow, and feel we belong.

What is DEIB?

Massachusetts Bay Community College is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging as our operating practice. Our definitions of DEIB are dynamic, empowering, and crucial to our mission and vision as a college community.

What is DEIB?

Diversity, according to the 2016 edition of the Global Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarks, refers to the variety of similarities and differences among people, including but not limited to gender, gender identity, ethnicity, race, native or indigenous origin, age, generation, sexual orientation, culture, religion, belief system, marital status, parental status, socio-economic difference, appearance, language and accent, disability, mental health, education, geography, nationality, work style, work experience, job role and function, thinking style, and personality type.

Equity within the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) context involves establishing and maintaining impartial and just practices and policies. It recognizes that individuals possess unique circumstances and may necessitate tailored allocations of resources and opportunities to achieve an equitable outcome. The aim is to rectify systemic disparities, ensuring that all individuals have the support and access essential for realizing equal outcomes and acknowledging and addressing the diverse needs of each person.

Inclusion, according to the 2016 edition of the Global Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarks, is a dynamic state where diversity is leveraged to create a fair, healthy, high-performing institution or community. An inclusive environment ensures equitable access to resources and opportunities for all. It also enables individuals and groups to feel safe, respected, engaged, motivated, and valued for who they are and their contributions toward institutional and societal goals.

Belonging signifies a deep sense of connection and inclusion. It goes beyond acceptance, fostering an environment where each individual feels valued, supported, and integral to the campus community. Belonging promotes a feeling of security, comfort, and overall well-being. It's the foundation of a culture that actively embraces and respects the unique experiences of every member, fostering collaborative relationships and contributing to the campus community.
