MassBay is committed to creating an equitable, inclusive, and transformative learning environment, a college community that respects and celebrates the diverse backgrounds, cultures, and experiences of the MassBay community. We strive to build a learning community of mutual respect, belonging, and understanding. We recognize that such a community allows people to realize their full potential. When students, faculty, and staff meet in a college environment where diversity, inclusion, respect, and social justice predominate, we all learn, grow, and feel we belong.
Diversity, according to the 2016 edition of the Global Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarks, refers to the variety of similarities and differences among people, including but not limited to gender, gender identity, ethnicity, race, native or indigenous origin, age, generation, sexual orientation, culture, religion, belief system, marital status, parental status, socio-economic difference, appearance, language and accent, disability, mental health, education, geography, nationality, work style, work experience, job role and function, thinking style, and personality type.
Equity within the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) context involves establishing and maintaining impartial and just practices and policies. It recognizes that individuals possess unique circumstances and may necessitate tailored allocations of resources and opportunities to achieve an equitable outcome. The aim is to rectify systemic disparities, ensuring that all individuals have the support and access essential for realizing equal outcomes and acknowledging and addressing the diverse needs of each person.
Inclusion, according to the 2016 edition of the Global Diversity & Inclusion Benchmarks, is a dynamic state where diversity is leveraged to create a fair, healthy, high-performing institution or community. An inclusive environment ensures equitable access to resources and opportunities for all. It also enables individuals and groups to feel safe, respected, engaged, motivated, and valued for who they are and their contributions toward institutional and societal goals.
Belonging signifies a deep sense of connection and inclusion. It goes beyond acceptance, fostering an environment where each individual feels valued, supported, and integral to the campus community. Belonging promotes a feeling of security, comfort, and overall well-being. It's the foundation of a culture that actively embraces and respects the unique experiences of every member, fostering collaborative relationships and contributing to the campus community.
At the Office of Diversity, our mission is to promote an inclusive campus environment that embraces and celebrates the richness of human diversity. We are dedicated to fostering equity, dismantling systemic barriers, and championing inclusivity to ensure everyone feels valued, respected, and empowered. Through proactive initiatives, education, and collaboration, we strive to create a campus where differences are accepted and embraced, contributing to a culture of innovation, creativity, and excellence.
Through continuous learning, open dialogue, and intentional action, our vision is to be a beacon of transformative change, leading the way toward a college where diversity is acknowledged and integral to our success. We aspire to create an environment where equity is the foundation, inclusion is the norm, and every voice is actively sought out and celebrated. Together, we can build a future where everyone, regardless of background or identity, experiences a sense of belonging and contributes to a harmonious and thriving community.
"The Students of Color Program has helped me feel like I belong on campus. At first, I was really nervous about starting college. The people here at MassBay are so welcoming and supportive, and instantly I found my people in the school. I was no longer intimidated by college. As my first semester went on, I started to share more about my culture and experiences. Having a safe space wasn’t the only thing that the Students of Color Program provided to me. I currently work as a SOC Ambassador for the program, and it has allowed me to make lifelong friendships and have a familiar community. I know many other students value the program just as much as I do." |
"I am a General Studies Science major focusing on chemical engineering. Being actively engaged in MassBay’s clubs has profoundly enriched my college experience, fostering a sense of belonging and connection within the campus community. Initiating the Open Minds club, which is dedicated to mental health awareness, has been particularly impactful in building a closer bond with my peers. This club serves as a platform for open conversations about mental health, offering support and understanding. We've created a space where individuals can share their experiences and feel supported in their journey. In addition to Open Minds, being part of the Students of Color Program has made me feel like I belong, thanks to the diverse perspectives and backgrounds it brings to various campus events." |
"I finished my coursework at MassBay after the Fall 2023 semester. MassBay has played a central role in my journey, offering many experiences and learning opportunities. The Students of Color Program, in particular, has opened numerous doors for me and cultivated lasting friendships I will cherish forever. Knowing that I can always turn to someone for support has been a tremendous comfort during my time at MassBay. As I move forward, I carry the invaluable experiences and connections from MassBay, grateful for its foundation in my pursuit of greater endeavors."
"When I first came to MassBay, I planned to keep my head down and work as hard as I could to complete my associate degree and transfer as soon as possible. One day, while staying after school to do my homework, I was invited to an Uno tournament hosted by the Students of Color Program. Immediately, I realized I needed to get more involved on campus. The Students of Color Program's emphasis on community building and collaboration changed my whole perspective on what community college could be. I learned that community college is not just a place to learn, but also a place to build and grow with other people." |
"The satisfaction I derive from helping our students navigate life and pursue an education that they might not have otherwise been able to attain—an education that will one day open many doors for them and their families, even when they've been told it's not achievable for whatever reason. I am filled with so much joy when I see these same students testify that because of us, they are now graduating or transferring to a four-year college. Unspeakable joy is the reason I love working at MassBay."
"I like being part of the MassBay community because it is rich with diversity and actively committed to recognizing and honoring that diversity. I get to work with sincere, passionate people to create an environment where any type of student is welcome and supported, and I get to learn from people who are different from me, whether they be students, staff, or other faculty. Working in an environment that accepts people for who they are means that I feel accepted, too."
“As an alum turned staff member, I've come to appreciate how special the MassBay community is—a place where regardless of one's role, we all understand the greater mission: to shine a path for our students so they can enrich themselves not just academically, but also with the countless additional channels of support offered here, which you simply can't find in other institutions. I'm thrilled to know that the only true measure of success at MassBay is how you can improve existing infrastructure or envision new and improved ways of service delivery. MassBay leadership will give you the tools necessary to make those visions a reality, regardless of other factors.”
