All students applying to the Practical Nursing (PN) program at MassBay must take the HESI Admission Assessment (A2) exam — HESI Exam — at a Prometric Test Center. The exam assesses an applicant’s academic readiness and is a predictor for success in the first semester of a PN program.
PREPARATION
HESI publishes a HESI review book specifically for this exam, HESI Admission Assessment Exam Review (4th Edition, Copyright 2017, ISBN 9780323353786). This book can be purchased through Amazon or at bookstores such as Barnes and Noble, and is also available for purchase through MassBay’s campus bookstore. The book will include samples of test questions from the subject areas that will be covered on the HESI Exam as well as information regarding test question formats. It will highlight important concepts and provide tips for studying and test-taking. It also offers a 25-question pre-test at the beginning of the text helps you assess your areas of strength and weakness before using the text, and a 50-question comprehensive post–test that covers all of the text’s subject areas. The questions will also include rationales for correct/incorrect answers. Mass Bay also offers HESI Exam preparation assistance through our MassBay Academic Achievement Center (AAC) at several different times and campus locations. WHEN TO TAKE THE HESI A2 EXAM
Students typically take the HESI Exam during the fall semester immediately prior to applying to their PN Day program. Students should have completed all prerequisites, or be currently enrolled in those courses, before taking the HESI Exam. Seats in MassBay’s PN program are limited. It is recommended that you take the exam and allow for your application to be acted upon as early as possible. Discuss your readiness with your academic advisor or admissions counselor.
HESI A2 EXAM DATES FOR PN ENROLLMENT
Begin Classes — day program:
- For Priority Admission decision the exam dates are approximately September 15–December 31 annually.
- Additional testing option dates are approximately January 1–May 25, annually. If seats are still available, additional review will take place by June 1.
We advise scheduling the HESI exam well in advance of the testing deadline as seating may become limited in the testing centers as the deadline nears.
