WELLESLEY HILLS, Mass. (December 18, 2024) — MassBay Community College is proud to spotlight the ongoing work of the Institute for Trauma, Adversity, and Resilience in Higher Education, a pioneering initiative dedicated to transforming how higher education addresses the impact of trauma and adversity on adult learners. As part of its mission to promote understanding and action, the Institute is excited to announce the release of a new video that underscores the urgency of adopting trauma-informed practices in higher education.
The Institute builds on the understanding that trauma and adversity profoundly shape the learning experience, particularly for adult learners. By acknowledging these challenges, MassBay promotes a brain-based approach to fostering resilience, which guides teaching methods, support services, and institutional practices designed to empower students and advance equity in higher education.
The newly released video introduces educators, professionals, campus leaders, and those invested in higher education to why trauma-informed practices are essential to student success. Some of the highlights of the video include explaining the importance of creating supportive learning environments for all students, sparking conversations and new ideas for making campuses more inclusive and resilient, and offering a practical tool for educators and leaders advocating for more resources and support in the area of trauma-informed teaching.
“By breaking down the importance of trauma-informed practices into an accessible and engaging format, we hope this video will educate and inspire action across higher education,” said Institute for Trauma, Adversity, and Resilience in Higher Education Founder and Director, Jeanie Tietjen Ph.D. “It’s a powerful starting point for understanding how we can better serve our students and vital to securing their success in college and beyond.”
This video is the latest addition to an on-going comprehensive compilation of resources the Institute has curated to assist practitioners. Further supporting materials and the video can be found here:
