FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (September 9, 2024) — MassBay Community College will proudly host a MetroWest Prostate Cancer Awareness Event on Saturday, September 28, 2024, from 10am–2pm on the MassBay Framingham campus, 490 Franklin Street. This event is free and open to the public. Attendees can participate in several educational seminars to learn more about prostate cancer, hear personal stories from survivors, and have their blood drawn by Quest Diagnostics for a free screening. No health insurance is required for prostate cancer screenings, and lunch will be provided to all guests. The event will be offered in English, Spanish, and Portuguese.
This event is the inaugural event of the MetroWest Prostate Cancer Awareness Event Committee, a collaboration between MassBay, the Greater Framingham Community Church, the Prostate Health Education Network (PHEN), the Latino Health Insurance Program, and the American Public Health Association.
Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States and is the most common cancer in men. According to the American Cancer Society, in 2024, there were approximately 299,010 new cases of prostate cancer in the U.S. and about 35,250 deaths attributed to the disease. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that Black men are more likely to develop prostate cancer than men of other racial and ethnic groups, and are twice as likely to die from the disease.
