In 1964 thousands of children were born with serious disabilities related to rubella exposure during pregnancy. While the nation’s scientists rushed to create a vaccine and develop better screening tests, families faced difficult decisions about current and future pregnancies. This Exhibit highlights the work of researchers, parents, healthcare professionals and educators to respond to rubella and its devastating life changing health consequences in the years before an effective vaccine nearly eliminated the disease from the United States. To go along with this exhibit on infectious disease and vaccine research, the Library will also be collecting Covid-19 Reflections for a Memory Wall.
