WELLESLEY HILLS, Mass. (June 10, 2020) — MassBay Community College is pleased to announce that Amber Khan of Newton, MA, will deliver the student commencement address to her fellow classmates and guests at the College’s 58th commencement ceremony. Due to the coronavirus and practicing state-issued social distancing policies, this year’s commencement ceremony will be held virtually, on Tuesday, June 30, 2020 at 6pm.
Khan, a first-generation college student, will graduate with an Associate of Science in general studies science and plans to transfer to a four-year university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry. She is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society for two-year college students. She participated in the College’s Leadership Engagement and Development (LEAD) program, acted as a mentee in the STEM Mentor Program, and was one of eight students from MassBay selected to take part in Sanofi’s Experiential Learning Opportunity program over spring break in 2019.
“I’m excited to be delivering the commencement address to my fellow graduates, especially because this is my first graduation. MassBay has helped me create incredible opportunities for my future,” said Khan. “When I came to MassBay, I hadn’t expected much from myself in terms of academics. I moved around a lot in high school and I had fallen behind my peers. I never graduated from high school—I earned my GED. Coming to MassBay was the stepping stone I needed for where I want to go, and I met so many amazing people who have helped guide me. I am humbled I was chosen to speak and want to give a proper goodbye and send-off to all the graduates. I hope I can make this special.”
Due to the on-going coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and abiding by Governor Charlie Baker’s social gathering advisories for the health and safety of the community, MassBay Community College’s commencement ceremony is being held exclusively on a digital platform. This is the first time in the College’s history a commencement ceremony has been held virtually.
