WELLESLEY HILLS, Mass. (March 3, 2021) — Registration is now open for seven online and remote summer courses exclusively for high school students at MassBay Community College. The six-week courses start on July 6, 2021 and include Entrepreneurship, Principles of Management, General Biology I with a Lab, Creative Writing, Drugs and Society, Medical Terminology, and Security Awareness (course descriptions are below). High school students can also enroll in other MassBay courses this summer and study alongside college-aged students.
“Due to the coronavirus, many families are concerned that students haven’t made as much academic progress as they would like during the pandemic,” said Associate Dean of Admissions and Community Learning, Alison McCarty. “The Summer College Experience offers high school students an opportunity to maintain and develop skills over the summer to be prepared for a more successful new academic year, earn college credits at an affordable price, and possibly find a career path that interests them.”
Here are brief course descriptions
Entrepreneurship prepares students to develop business ideas and plans to start, develop, finance, market, manage, and launch a new business. This course gives students the skills and knowledge they need to master the requirements of all the stages of launching a new business and the opportunity to build and implement a new business.
Principles of Management integrates traditional and behavioral approaches to management including the managerial functions of planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling. Students will learn decision-making, leadership, communication, coordination, delegation, and about authority and responsibility relationships.
Creative Writing gives students the opportunity to analyze and experiment in a number of creative writing genres, which may include creative non-fiction, fiction, poetry, and drama, among others. The class will read and discuss the work of various writers and will participate in exercises designed to generate and compose original material.
Drugs and Society examines the history of drugs in American culture. Topics may include the social, economic, legal, medical, and other issues concerning drug use and abuse; the causes of drug use and abuse; and the impact of drugs on the individual and society.
General Biology I is a pre-requisite for upper level biology courses required for admission to Nursing and other selective Health Sciences programs at MassBay. It is a course on the facts and principles of biology at the introductory level. The course has a mandatory lab that complements the lecture: students must register for both the lecture and lab. This course is designed to meet the needs of non-STEM major programs including Nursing. Topics include biological principles common to all organisms. An in-depth study of the cell is presented including chemistry, structure and function of cell organelles, cellular respiration, photosynthesis, cell reproduction, Mendelian genetics, patterns of inheritance, protein synthesis, molecular genetics, and DNA technology, continuation of the study of ecology.
Medical Terminology presents construction of medical terms through common word roots, prefixes, and suffixes. Students will learn to master medical vocabulary through classroom instruction.
The Security Awareness computer science course provides a basic survey of data, computer, internet, and wireless security. The security principles—confidentiality, integrity, and availability—are introduced to students as well as the threats and attacks that undermine these principals.
