Biotechnology Degree

Our renowned Biotechnology program at MassBay offers hands-on, research-based study in the rapidly expanding field. Students gain training in the most in-demand scientific disciplines sought by the industry, academia, and government labs. The curriculum covers DNA, RNA, proteins, biologics, biomanufacturing, cell culture, HPLC, gene therapy, and gene-editing techniques like CRISPR-Cas9. This prepares students for careers in the biotech & biopharma industry, advanced R&D, or further education. Our program caters to nontraditional students and includes inquiry-based labs, research internships, and peer mentoring. The biotechnology lab at MassBay is among the most advanced undergraduate research facilities, recognized by experts and the National Biotechnology Education Center.

We offer AS degrees in “Biotechnology” and “Genomics & Biomanufacturing”. Our facility houses the Center for Therapeutics and Genomics Training (CTGT) and the Center for Biomanufacturing Education and Workforce Training (CBEWT). Equipped with state-of-the-art tools, students gain expertise in gene regulation, next generation sequencing, genetic engineering, PCR, cell culture, bioprocessing, and more. We are proud to empower students for success in the biotechnology/biomanufacturing industry and contribute to groundbreaking advancements.

Dr. Nirmal K. Singh in Center for Therapeutics and Genomics Training Center for Therapeutics and Genomics Training

Supported by a $500,000 grant from the Baker-Polito Administration and Massachusetts Life Sciences Center (MLSC), MassBay is transforming the biotechnology laboratories on its Wellesley Hills campus into a state-of-the-art training facility.

The facility and equipment upgrades will enable the College to offer an array of new credit and non-credit courses in areas such as Molecular and Developmental Biology, Gene Therapy, Edible Vaccines, Genomics, Next Generation Sequencing Technologies, and Biomanufacturing. The Center will also offer new educational opportunities for high school students, as well as create additional opportunities for corporate partnerships focused on employee-training programs.

MassBay’s biotechnology department already has a well-earned reputation for preparing students to meet the growing demand for highly-skilled technician and research associate positions. The Center for Therapeutics and Genomics Training will introduce students to modern techniques, incorporating rigorous investigative practices into the College’s biotechnology curriculum.

“It is a fascinating time for the biotechnology community, and I am very excited and motivated to lead the development of the new Center and the various programs of our biotechnology department at MassBay,” said Dr. Nirmal K. Singh, MassBay Biotechnology Department Chair, “currently, genomics and therapeutics are two of the most critical and fascinating fields of study in biotechnology. The new training Center will be pioneering at the community college level and will be well-positioned to be a national model for other two-year programs.”

This grant will fund state-of-the-art equipment such as a high-content imaging system for cell analyzing, as well as a high-grade and industry-aligned gene analyzer.

Biotechnology

Our Biotechnology program is internationally renowned and offers exciting, hands-on, and research-based study in this rapidly expanding scientific area. Through participation in national research collaborations, students are trained in the scientific disciplines most in demand by the biotechnology industry and government laboratories, including recombinant DNA technology, mammalian cell culture, and chromatography with special emphasis on High Performance Liquid Chromatography. Biotechnology students intern at some of the most prestigious research institutions in the world, such as Dana Farber (Boston), Boston Medical Center, The University of Edinburgh (Scotland), Moscow State University (Russia), University of the Amazon (Brazil), and the University of Quebec at Trois-Rivières (Canada).

Biotechnology: Genomics and Biomanufacturing

Biotechnology: Genomics and Biomanufacturing

Biomanufacturing and Genomics technologies have a growing importance in the biopharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. This concentration program will introduce students to the ever-expanding industries related to biotechnology, biopharmaceutical, and biomedical sciences.

The goal of this program is to introduce students to modern biological techniques. They will learn to apply their scientific knowledge and skills to real-world biotech research and academic problems.

Students will acquire skill sets that are top in-demand techniques/expertise in the biotechnology industry, including genomics, biomanufacturing process, and biopharma R&D. These techniques include bioreactor use, in vivo and in vitro cell culturing, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), aseptic technique, genomic editing techniques like CRISPR, equipment prep, chromatography, assays for functional characterization, transcriptome analysis, and DNA sequencing analysis.

In addition, students will learn soft critical skills, including critical thinking skills.

These techniques will also provide a strong foundation for those students who are willing to pursue their career in four-year colleges/universities or advanced R&D laboratories.

Since our biotechnology program is a research-based and peer mentoring intensive program structured to engage nontraditional students, our curriculum uses inquiry-based laboratories, hands-on instruction, and internships in world-renowned institutions to confer in-depth scientific knowledge to students.
