MassBay Student Athlete Competes at National Golf Championship

WELLESLEY HILLS, Mass. (June 2019) — MassBay Community College is pleased to announce student athlete Dylan Quaratiello of Somerville, will compete at the 2019 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Men’s Golf National Championship at the Chautaugua Golf Club in Chautaugua, New York, June 4 -7. Quaratiello placed fifth at the 2019 Regional Men’s Golf Championship at The Ranch Golf Club in Southwick, MA on May 21st and 22nd, shooting 92 in round one and 83 in round two, for a combined score of 175, earning him a spot to compete at the National Championship.

“I am proud of Dylan and his accomplishments, both on and off the golf course this year,” said MassBay Athletic Director, Adam Nelson. “I know Dylan will be a great representative for MassBay at the National Tournament.”

“A lot of golfers would have thrown in the towel after a tough day one, but Dylan stayed focused, understood that every shot mattered, and most importantly, played incredibly intelligent golf, and he deserves the opportunity to represent MassBay at the NJCAA National Championship,” said MassBay Golf Coach, David Rixham. “Dylan has a ton of potential and when he plays a high-IQ brand of golf, he tends to find himself in contention.”

“I’m really glad I was able to put together a really good round on the final day at the Regional Championship, since I put myself in a difficult position after day one being a few shots behind,” said Quaratiello. “I want to thank Coach Rixham for being by my side for both days and the host course for keeping it in such good condition. As for the National Championship, I look forward to representing MassBay at Chautaugua.”

Quaratiello is a biotechnology major and member of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. This is his first year on the MassBay Men’s Golf team and his first trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association Championship. Quaratiello currently works at the Fresh Pond Golf Course in Cambridge, MA as the PGA Junior League Assistant Coach and “enjoys teaching young kids about golf and good sportsmanship.” His future plans include earning his associate degree at MassBay in biotechnology, transferring to a four-year university to pursue a bachelor’s degree in biotechnology with a minor in business, and continuing to play golf. 

This is the third straight year MassBay has had at least one golfer qualify to compete at the NJCAA Men’s Golf National Championship.
